The central premise of Cosi is that a young, first-time director is hired to direct a play as part of a therapeutic program meant to keep the inmates of the asylum engaged and to “bring them out of their shells” as the social worker Justin informs Lewis.
Roy is able to draw attention to himself as he melodramatically “clutches his chest, pretending to have a heart attack” to distract the audience while Lewis runs off stage to fix the music.
Lewis has been challenged to reflect upon what is important to him, to think about his values and his relationships and to realise that the ways in which he has been conducting his life have left him feeling empty and unfulfilled.
Lewis has learnt that there is merit in allowing himself ” through the vicissitudes of life” to be “ruled by reason”.
It is not only Lewis who learns in Così, but other characters as well.
It is through their performances in Così Fan Tutte that the characters discover themselves.
