Project Monitoring is a systematic continuous process of collecting and analysing data about the progress of a project or program over time and the other side, Results Chain is the causal sequence in the planning of a development intervention that stipulates the possible pathways for achieving desired results beginning with the activities through which inputs are mobilized to produce specific outputs and culminating in outcome, impacts and feedback (Foundations of Success 2009).
Result chain provides a theoretical model for defining the interrelated components of a project that are required for its success (inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes and impacts). By developing performance indicators that track these different components we are able to assess whether an initiative is being implemented as planned, or whether it is necessary to adjust project activities to maximize benefit and overcome unanticipated obstacles.
My selected Project Goal
Strengthened livelihoods and resilience of the communities in Pageri County of South Sudan.
The project Purpose
To enhance livelihoods opportunities and food security to better adapt, cope and recover from recurrent shocks and stresses in Pageri County by 2022.
The expected Outcomes of the project: Households and communities have enhanced livelihoods opportunities and food security to better adapt, cope and recover from recurrent shocks and stresses.
Project elements that we can monitor following the entire Result chain of this project are basically the performance indicators includes the inputs, activities, Outputs, outcomes and impacts;
Inputs; these are financial and physical resources that are committed to the project or programme activities. For example; in this project our financial inputs comes from the donors especially the UKAID, we’ll have to procure the farm tools, seeds and machineries for the success of the project and we’ll need to recruit staff for the project. Therefore while monitoring our performance indicator at this level, we will be looking at availability of the various resources that we need to have to kick the project off.
Activities; on the hand the activities looks at the utilisation of the resources procured in the inputs above to generate products and services. Example; In our identified project our activities shall include, establishing farmer field schools and demo plots, training of women and men farmers in the various payams on integrated pest and crop management techniques, distributing agricultural production inputs such as crop and vegetable seeds, hand tools and treadle pumps and the formation of farmers’ groups and/or associations. At this level we monitor the various tasks each personnel is to undertake to transform inputs to outputs. Here we should be able to answer the question like, what is to be done; Are these activities being implemented as it was budgeted and as scheduled?
Output; these are the products and services delivered as a result of the activities. Example of this in our project includes making sure that; Capacity of community farmers built or strengthened with modern techniques to improve resilience and food security, At least 50% of the community farmers have access to modern farming inputs. Here must be able to find out how the beneficiaries feel about our work, or whether the services are being delivered to the target groups and whether the outputs are leading to achieving the set short-term results.
Outcome; at the outcome level we shall look at who will benefit from or use the services, we shall also look at the possible behavioural change this project can bring. Example for our resilience project will be how households ; communities in Pageri County will have enhanced livelihoods opportunities ; food security to better adapt, cope and recover from recurrent shocks ; stresses
Impact; this long-term, widespread change. This element looks beyond just the effectiveness at the outcome level, it answers the question that, since the outcome has been realised, so what? For example in our project if at all we realised behaviour change, we’ll still have to analyse if communities in Pageri have enhanced livelihood food security, we’ll have to yet look at the socioeconomic and political changes this intervention will to the community. To this, we may involve the members of the communities that did not directly benefit from this project. This can therefore monitor the degree at Improved food security and livelihoods of the rural population of Pageri County will be realised
