According to statistics three fourths of women incarcerated are mothers of children. These children are sent to live with relatives or placed in foster homes and usually do not get to live with their mothers for a very long time which leads to the child having to go through a lot of struggles in their lives and not getting to bong with their mother which is an important part of childhood development. Children of incarcerated mothers are more likely to suffer from detachment or behavioural issues. These children are more prone than their peers to suffer from substance abuse problems and fall behind in school when they are older, they are five to six times more likely to end up in prison when they grow up. Mothers in prison have reported feeling anger, anxiety, sadness, depression, shame, guilt, low self-esteem and loss when separated from their children
